Mayo Shattuck Announces Constellation Energy's Support of Pilot to Connect Marylanders with Human Service Answers
Mayo Shattuck, chairman, president and chief executive officer of Constellation Energy recently announced the company's sponsorship of Maryland's 2-1-1 pilot program which, in partnership with the United Way of Central Maryland, will provide 70 percent of the state with an easy-to-remember telephone number that connects callers to local community service and volunteer opportunities 24 hours a day. Constellation Energy, led by Mayo Shattuck, helped launch the new dialing code on Wednesday, Oct. 11, at the United Way of Central Maryland's First Call for Help™ center.
"Constellation Energy is pleased to play a leading role in the local launch and pilot of this extremely worthwhile program," said Mayo Shattuck. "We know there are people in need who don't take advantage of community resources because they don't know where to turn for information besides calling 911. The 2-1-1 service can make a meaningful difference in people's daily lives by providing access to critical health and human services that many of us so often take for granted.
"Constellation Energy places great value on community commitment and we're always proud to partner with the United Way," Mayo Shattuck added.
Like 911, 2-1-1 is an easy-to-remember telephone number that connects callers to local community service and volunteer opportunities 24 hours a day. Maryland will have four 2-1-1 pilot centers - in Baltimore, Hyattsville, Salisbury and Frederick - that will give citizens one number to call when they need to access human services. 2-1-1 builds on the success of Maryland's many information and referral lines that go beyond 9-1-1 emergency services. In central Maryland alone, United Way's First Call for Help logged more than 90,000 calls in 2005.
"Each year, Constellation Energy makes considerable financial and human capital commitments to the communities where we have significant operations," said Mayo Shattuck. "In 2005, for example, our company contributed $10 million to organizations through corporate programs focused on corporate giving, volunteerism and employee giving."
Similar to 911 for emergencies, 2-1-1 will help Marylanders with information about resources such as:
- Basic Human Needs
- Physical and Mental Health
- Employment Support
- Support for Older Americans and Persons with Disabilities
- Support for Children, Youth and Families
- Volunteer Opportunities and Donations
While 911 remains the first responder to emergency, the service also is a vital resource in times of disaster. 2-1-1 has been a valuable source of information in Connecticut during the 9/11 attacks in nearby New York, the 2004 hurricane season in Florida and last year's devastating Gulf Coast hurricanes.
"As a powerful corporate partner, Constellation Energy invests in and supports organizations that are working to improve the quality of life in our communities. Our efforts are not new. We trace a 190-year tradition of giving back to the communities we serve and are guided by a firm belief that our resources and employee family can have a profound and positive effect on the world around us," said Mayo Shattuck.
